Chicago Bears: Rookie WR Darnell Mooney could be a game changer

Nothing is more important for the Chicago Bears during the 2020 season than figuring out their quarterback situation. Whether it ends up being Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles, the Bears need to find at least solid play at the position if they expect to compete at all. One way to help out their quarterbacks is to get more well-rounded play at the wide receiver position.

Allen Robinson is the number one receiver in this offense and honestly, he is really the only pass-catcher who the Bears can truly count on. Chicago will be hoping that Anthony Miller can step up and take on a major role, but he is far from an established player. There will be others who can step up and make an impact if they prove worthy.

In the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears took Tulane wide receiver Darnell Mooney. Mooney was not a perfect prospect, but he is an exciting talent who has plenty of upside moving forward. If he can learn the offense quickly, Mooney certainly has a chance to come in and make an immediate impact on this team.

At 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, Mooney certainly lacks ideal size at the wide receiver position. However, what he lacks in size, he makes up for in raw speed and explosive playmaking ability. Mooney is a quick and precise route runner in the slot who easily separates against man coverage and does a nice job of finding the soft spots against zone.

Once the ball is in his hands, Mooney shows impressive elusiveness in the open field and has the explosive speed to take it to the house from anywhere on the field. He is a dynamic deep threat who tracks the ball in the air extremely well, but do not sleep on his ability to contribute in the short-to-intermediate range as well.

Mooney is a dynamic athlete who always plays hard. The Chicago Bears will be looking for impact players at the wide receiver position this season and Mooney has more raw upside than any other receiver on the roster besides Robinson. He could certainly come in and make an immediate impact for this team.
