Expectation: Be in the defensive rookie of the year discussion

LSU linebacker Patrick Queen had a major rise throughout the NFL Draft process, especially during the College Football Playoff. He flashed his abilities working downhill against the run and demonstrated his great feel for zone coverage. Combining the tape with a good week of testing landed Queen in the first round to the Baltimore Ravens.

Queen was, depending on what you define Isaiah Simmons as, the third or fourth linebacker off the board, after both Kenneth Murrray and Jordyn Brooks. This definitely came as a surprise, because many, including this writer, had him as the top of his class.

Queen is already listed as a starter on the depth chart, and will likely man one of the inside linebacker spots to start off the 2020 season. As a starter, on a team that has had impressive linebackers in the past, expectations should be high.

That’s why, as a first-round pick, it makes sense to set the bar high in year one. Despite Chase Young and Simmons leading the way early as defensive rookie of the year favorites, Queen should end up right there with them. He should make an impact on all three downs, forcing a couple of turnovers, and potentially lead the team in tackles.
