2021 NFL Draft: Teams will love offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi
Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi will be a hot commodity in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell may easily end up being the top overall prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft class. Sewell is an absolutely dominant offensive lineman who nearly has the OT1 spot on lock, even this early in the process. However, Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi could give him a run for his money.
It is obviously still early in the evaluation process, but the more I watch Cosmi, the more I like him as a player. Cosmi is listed at 6-foot-7, 309 pounds and while I am not sure that he is quite that tall, he undoubtedly has the necessary size and length needed to be a successful blindside protector at the next level.
What really stands out when watching Cosmi is his ability to easily move around the field and his overall athleticism at the offensive tackle position. Cosmi is quick out of his stance and does a great job of getting back into his sets in a timely manner. Cosmi moves his feet extremely well in pass protection and shows impressive natural instincts when mirroring opposing edge rushers.
While Cosmi lacks ideal power up front, he does a nice job of putting himself into a position to succeed as a run blocker. He understands angles well and maintains his blocks relatively well. If Cosmi can fill out his frame a bit, the power will likely increase. If that happens, he will quickly go from an adequate run blocker to a good one.
Cosmi has some sloppy technique, especially when it comes to his hand placement in pass protection. That being said, you can’t teach the kind of raw athleticism that he has up front. NFL coaches are going to look at this guy and feel confident that they can clean up his game a bit and turn him into a true franchise left tackle.
Besides Sewell, Cosmi is the best offensive tackle prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft class. Do not be surprised if he ends up being a top 10 pick next April.
