2. Using a 5th-round pick on George Kittle

The 49ers may have missed the boat in Lynch’s first draft class by not taking Patrick Mahomes with their first selection, but a number of teams made that same mistake.

Although not many teams have much to write home about from the 2017 NFL Draft, the 49ers got one of the best players in the entire class in fifth-round tight end George Kittle out of Iowa.

Kittle really turned heads at the 2017 Scouting Combine with a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash and a 35-inch vertical jump. Those numbers impressed even many Iowa Hawkeyes fans who had seen Kittle have a solid, not quite spectacular career in Iowa City.

Since coming into the league in 2017, Kittle has established himself as one of the most impactful, dynamic offensive weapons in the NFL and the unquestioned alpha of the 49ers’ passing game.

He is the best tight end in the NFL right now and the 49ers got him with a fifth-round pick.
