What teams from the 2017 NFL Draft should regret passing on Patrick Mahomes the most?

Patrick Mahomes shook the NFL world last week when he signed a 10-year extension with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 2017 NFL Draft pick, 2018 MVP and Super Bowl 54 champion is now signed through the 2031 season. He could make up to $503 million in the deal and could end up in an opt any offseason if the Chiefs don’t pick up his roster bonus.

The half-billion-dollar man is in a good spot to win multiple titles over this expected long tenure. Kansas City has surrounded him with weapons and defensive stalwart Chris Jones just signed a big extension. The young core is in place to win championships.

When looking back, it’s hard to imagine Mahomes being the 10th overall selection in the 2017 draft. However, Mahomes was a bit of a wild card in the draft because of how raw he was in terms of footwork and decision making. Sitting a year certainly was a benefit, and he has risen to the top in terms of quarterback play in the NFL.

So, if we were to look back with this hindsight, which of the nine teams should regret passing on him the most? For some teams, it’s tough, because they did get elite players in the top 10, and now have potential starters at quarterback. Also, in this article, we won’t mention the Bears. They’ve gone through enough, and they at least took a chance on a quarterback.

We are looking elsewhere, and even though everyone would pounce on the opportunity now, we’ve pegged three teams that rise above the rest. Before we dive in, there were a couple of honorable mentions.

The Los Angeles Chargers got a good player in the 2017 NFL Draft in Mike Williams, but they could’ve had Mahomes behind Rivers and now just be stepping in. Cleveland could’ve made a move to jump back into the top 10, but they did get Myles Garrett, who just landed a huge extension. San Francisco is a super intriguing option because imagine that team without Solomon Thomas and with Mahomes. They probably win it all in 2019. Now, let’s take a look at the three.
