*This pick comes via the Jalen Ramsey trade with the Los Angeles Rams.
The Jaguars found a new franchise quarterback earlier in this 2021 NFL Draft scenario and here, they use their extra first-round selection to get him some protection. Penei Sewell is the clear top offensive tackle in this draft class, but there are certainly other offensive tackles worth getting excited about. Most notably, Jackson Carman out of Clemson.
Carman took over as the starting left tackle for Clemson last season and had immediate success. The 6-foot-5, 345-pound offensive lineman has ideal size and length for the position and knows how to use great frame well. Carman does a fantastic job of keeping defenders away from his body in the pass rush and is an absolute mauler in the run game.
Carman fires off of the ball quickly and shows impressive power at the point of attack. His hands are accurate and violent, consistently snapping opposing defenders back on first contact. He also does a great job of keeping his feet moving and driving the defender down the field throughout the play.
A big man with obvious power in both the run game and pass protection, there is a lot to like about Carman on the surface. However, do not sleep on his ability to move. Carman has quick feet and tremendous athleticism for a man of his size.
Cam Robinson has been alright for the Jaguars at the left tackle position, but there is certainly room for improvement in that area. Carman has an incredible combination of size, power and athleticism that makes him an immediate upgrade for the Jags at the position and Robinson could kick inside to guard and improve their situation on the interior.
