Top pick: Cam Akers, RB, Florida State
The release of Todd Gurley paved the way for the Rams to draft Cam Akers, whose bounce-back season in 2019 really helped raise his value back up to the second round.
After a tremendous freshman campaign, Akers took a bit of a step back in 2018 and many NFL analysts wondered if he would be able to recover.
He did in a big way and now he’s poised to be the lead back in one of the best offenses in the NFL.
Steal: DB Terrell Burgess, Utah – 3rd round
One of the most versatile defensive backs in this class, Burgess can play a hybrid safety/nickel role for the Rams’ secondary right away.
New defensive coordinator Brandon Staley can blitz, cover, tackle — you name it. He’s going to be a big-time weapon in the NFL and the Rams got him in the third round.
Overall Grade: B
Although Cam Akers and Van Jefferson didn’t scream ‘value’ or ‘star power’, the Rams may have sneakily gotten a lot better on offense with those two picks.
If healthy, Terrell Lewis is a big-time threat as a rusher off the edge, and the Rams desperately need that.
Other than their top four picks, the most impactful rookie could wind. up being kicker Sam Sloman, a second-team All-American in 2019 who connected on 87 percent of his college field goals.
He hit on four-of-five field goals last season of 50 yards or longer.
Jordan Fuller should provide nice special teams ability immediately, and tight end Brycen Hopkins is a player who could definitely factor in down. the line or if injuries arise in 2020.
