How does rookie Isaiah Coulter fit in the Houston Texans depth chart at WR?

The 2020 NFL Draft class at wide receiver is going to be fun to watch this season for almost all 32 teams in the league. The Houston Texans depth chart at wide receiver no longer features DeAndre Hopkins, but it does feature an intriguing rookie out of Rhode Island — Isaiah Coulter.

The Texans selected Coulter in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft and got in on the action at wide receiver in this potentially historic class.

Coulter had over 1,000 receiving yards this past season for Rhode Island, showing off his tremendous speed and athleticism with big plays downfield and some tough, contested catches as well.

Isaiah Coulter’s 2019 highlights

Coulter is a player who can really challenge defenses vertically with his 4.46 speed. His speed combined with quickness and good route-running ability could make for some instant impact as a rookie, but he’s not going to be playing in Rhode Island anymore.

This is the NFL where defensive backs are bigger, stronger, smarter, and way more physical at the line of scrimmage. That’s an area where Coulter is going to have to improve over the course of his rookie season with Houston as he adjusts to the NFL.

Texans pecking order at receiver

  • 1. Brandin Cooks
  • 2. Kenny Stills
  • 3. Randall Cobb
  • 4. Will Fuller
  • 5. Keke Coutee

The Texans will have to replace nearly 1,000 snaps played by DeAndre Hopkins last season, and obviously Brandin Cooks was brought in partly to contribute in that way, but what Houston has done with the addition of Cooks, Randall Cobb, and Isaiah Coulter this offseason is go from a more possession-oriented group to a group whose speed is the biggest threat to opposing defenses.

It’s hard to look at Houston’s wide receiver depth chart on paper and find an immediate fit in the top four for Isaiah Coulter outside of an injury happening, but as we’ve seen in recent years, that’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

Coulter will have to be ready if his name is called upon, but in his rookie season, he may have the luxury of providing occasional help as a rotational player while working primarily on special teams.

Coulter profiles as a starter at the receiver position at the NFL level, but on the 2020 Houston Texans depth chart, he could be buried.
