Jon Runan Jr. was the best value pick of the Green Bay Packers 2020 Draft class.

The Green Bay Packers were the butt of plenty of jokes after the 2020 NFL Draft, as they made some questionable picks, to say the least. Not only did they surprise with the selection of Utah State quarterback, Jordan Love, in the first round but just about every other pick they had could be classified as a bit of reach as well.

The team had nine total picks by the time the 2020 NFL Draft was finished and there were few positives to take from their selections. However, there was one name that I believe could prove to be their best value pick of a head-scratching class and that is former Michigan tackle, Jon Runyan Jr.

The Packers took Runyan with their first sixth-round pick (192 overall) and I think he will prove to be a nice depth piece early. The son of a former Pro-Bowler, Runyan started 26 games at offensive tackle for the Michigan Wolverines and was voted First-Team All-Big 10 in 2018. His lineage and experience alone make him an intriguing developmental option but he brings some skill to the table as well.

Runyan is a good mover and his experience shows on tape too, as he is quick to diagnose blitzes and stunts. However, even with his quick processing ability, Runyan can struggle with hand placement and does not show the necessary strength that is needed at the next level. For this reason, it’s no surprise to see that the Green Bay Packers will start his career at guard, where Matt LaFleur believes he is best equipped for.

He may have a shot to compete for a starting spot sooner, rather than later as well, as veteran right guard Billy Turner struggled in his first season in Green Bay. If his play doesn’t improve early in 2020, Runyan has the stuff to potentially challenge for that spot over time.

The selection of Jon Runyan Jr. was the lone pick for the Packers where I thought they got a steal of sorts and if he can add NFL strength and fine-tune some technique issues, I believe Runyan could be a steal down the line.
