Kansas City Chiefs get undrafted gem in CB Javaris Davis
The Kansas City Chiefs got themselves a gem in UDFA CB Javaris Davis.
Although the 2020 NFL Draft class was revered for its wide receiver group, this year’s crop of cornerback prospects was also pretty solid from top to bottom, and teams found gems at corner in the undrafted heap as a result.
The Cleveland Browns managed to steal Oklahoma State’s AJ Green after the 2020 draft while the Denver Broncos got Wake Forest corner Essang Bassey.
The Kansas City Chiefs got in on the action by signing Auburn cornerback Javaris Davis, a player who could very well wind up being an undrafted steal.
Davis played in 44 games for Auburn over the past four seasons and was a consistent playmaker for them, picking off eight passes, breaking up 27, and racking up 150 total tackles with 11 for a loss.
In today’s NFL, teams are playing at least 60-70 percent of their defensive snaps in a nickel alignment, and that’s where Davis can make his mark in the NFL.
Javaris Davis is a big-time playmaker
Despite being only 5-foot-8, Davis never backed down from a challenge at Auburn.
To start for four seasons in the SEC means Davis got work against the best of the best throughout his entire collegiate career, and he’s going to carry that confidence and swagger with him to the next level.
Even though he doesn’t have great size, Davis has blazing speed.
Put this guy in man coverage in the slot and let him go to work.
The Chiefs have a guy in Tyrann Mathieu who is no stranger to being doubted for his size, and if Mathieu has proven anything in the NFL it’s that you can overcome a size deficiency by being really good at everything else.
Davis will need time to adjust to the NFL just like every other rookie coming in, but based on his productivity and reliability over four seasons at Auburn, it’s kind of shocking he wasn’t drafted.
Especially with the importance of the nickel cornerback in today’s NFL, Davis has the type of skill set to excel for a long time in this league and be a key piece of the Chiefs’ defense at a bargain-basement price.
