Add a starting caliber right guard.

The Browns entered the offseason with GLARING holes at three of the five offensive line spots. Right tackle? Signed All-Pro Jack Conklin. Left tackle? Drafted one in the top 10. Right guard? Not really addressed to this point.

In the running to be the starting right guard for the Cleveland Browns come opening day at this point are; former Buffalo Bill Wyatt Teller, 2019 sixth-round pick Drew Forbes and last year’s starting right tackle Chris Hubbard.

I am of the belief that 2020 fifth-round pick Nick Harris, who played center and guard at Washington, could come in and grab the spot if given the chance. I absolutely love Harris’ game and his fit in the Browns system, but it looks like the team is going to keep him as the back-up center for now.

Regardless of how things play out with the current roster make-up, the Cleveland Browns will not have a viable, experienced starting right guard. With the pieces that they have at the other four line positions at this point, they may be able to get away with a weak spot at right guard, but I think they should go out and round out the line with yet another quality starter.

The good thing is that there are tons of options out there that I believe would be upgrades over who they are considering right now. Whether it is a trade for a veteran and a flier on a free agent, the Browns should go out and grab a new right guard.

A couple of trade options are Gabe Jackson of the Las Vegas Raiders and Joe Thuney of the New England Patriots. Both were hot in trade rumors during draft week, but both ended up staying put, at least for the meantime.

The Raiders could be moving on from the expensive contract of Jackson in favor of fourth-round pick John Simpson or former Brown Eric Kush while the Patriots have franchise tagged Thuney in hopes of working out a long-term deal. If that doesn’t pan out, he could certainly be on the move as well.

As far as free agents go, there are many viable options still on the market. After drafting Michigan interior offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints released Pro Bowl right guard Larry Warford. He may be better suited for a power run than a zone run scheme, but he can move well enough to play in Stefanski’s offense.

Mike Person started 14 games for the San Francisco 49ers offense on their way to their Super Bowl run, really settling in and playing the best football of his career over his past two seasons in The Bay after bouncing around a bit early in his career.

Kevin Stefanski should be very familiar with Josh Kline who he coached last season in Minnesota. Northeast Ohio should also be familiar with the Kent State alum who started 13 games for the Vikes a year ago and won a Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots.

Any of these guys listed above would be better than anyone the team seems to be considering as the starting right guard right now. That position is one of the few glaring weaknesses remaining on the roster so addressing it would go a long way it forming a truly well-rounded Cleveland Browns roster for the 2020 NFL season.
