Sign a free agent defensive end.

The lack of depth on the Cleveland Browns defensive line, particularly on the edge, was painful to watch down the stretch last season. Once Myles Garrett was suspended, Olivier Vernon got hurt and the Browns turned to some guys that most fans had never heard of.

Again, the front office did a solid job at this spot as well, solidifying the rotation with a productive veteran in Adrian Clayborn. The team also seems to have made the decision to keep Vernon on the roster for 2020 despite his high salary number, so Cleveland has some proven talent at the position.

However, depth is still needed and another star player to pair with Garrett, potentially long-term, couldn’t hurt either. You can’t be sure what you’re going to get out of Vernon this year with his recent injury concerns, Chad Thomas has shown flashes but hasn’t been a reliable option and Clayborn doesn’t quite have the ability that he once did.

The obvious name that jumps out is Jadeveon Clowney. As a former number one overall pick, Clowney was one of the biggest names coming into free agency this offseason, and surprisingly to most, is still on the market.

Clowney has had plenty of injury concerns of his own and may not post the flashy sack numbers that many people look for in an edge player, but when he is on the field and you watch him, it is clear that he makes an impact on the game. Paired with Myles Garrett? Watch out.

The Cleveland Browns currently have the most cap space in the NFL. Even with Vernon being the highest-paid player on the team this season. I know they both have their injury concerns, but maybe having them both could help keep both players healthy. Between the two of them, the Browns would be bound to get a season of consistent production from the position.

The Cleveland Browns and Jadeveon Clowney have been linked quite a bit in the media lately, with rumors swirling that the team offered him the most money but he may just not be interested in going to Cleveland regardless of the pay. If that’s the case, then this is all just conjecture but I think it is a great fit for both sides. Whether it is a short or long-term deal, Jadeveon Clowney is going to find a role and help a football team.

Beyond Clowney, I look at more rotational pieces. Guys such as Everson Griffen, Ezekiel Ansah, Clay Matthews, Terrell Suggs and Cameron Wake are all very experienced players who can get after the quarterback and still contribute on every down in a variety of roles. Adding any player like that would be a smart move given the recent lack of depth on the edge of the Cleveland Browns defensive line.
