Los Angeles Chargers re-draft: Fixing their 2020 NFL Draft haul
Round 1, Pick 23
Actual 2020 NFL Draft selection: Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma
Re-Draft selection: Jordan Love, QB, Utah State
The Los Angeles Chargers sent their second and third rounds picks in the 2020 NFL Draft to the New England Patriots in exchange for No. 23 overall. The value of this trade was perfectly fine for the Chargers, but their eventual target was a bit odd.
Kenneth Murray is a talented linebacker prospect who undoubtedly has a high ceiling at the next level, but he is a run-based defensive player who does not fit the modern NFL particularly well. He is an extremely quick and athletic linebacker, so the coverage upside is there, but Murray does not have good coverage instincts and that will have to improve if he is going to reach his ceiling.
I did not hate the move up for Murray, but there is some room for improvement here. After passing on a quarterback at No. 6, the Los Angeles Chargers use this trade up to take a chance on a potential franchise quarterback, taking Jordan Love.
Similarly to Herbert, Love has all of the physical traits that you love to see in a quarterback. He is extremely athletic, has a big arm and shows impressive natural accuracy at times. Mentally, he is still a work in progress, but he is an impressive natural playmaker with the ball in his hands and he undoubtedly has a high ceiling at the next level.
Love is not necessarily more likely to become a worthy franchise quarterback than Herbert. He is still an extremely risky prospect who needs some serious development at the next level. However, it is easier to manage that risk when you land Love at No. 23 compared to Herbert at No. 6. A first-round haul of Wills and Love looks much better than Herbert and Murray.
