2021 NFL Draft: Trey Lance lands in top five of way-too-early mock draft
New York Jets’ projected win total: 7.0
Shaun Wade 2019 stats: 26 total tackles (4 for loss), 2 sacks, 1 interception, 7 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles.
With the New York Jets bringing in Mekhi Becton to help solve their offensive tackle issues, wide receiver, cornerback and edge rusher stand out as the major positions of need for the team going forward. If Denzel Mims can show enough as a rookie in 2020, that wide receiver need may not look so desperate, but they are undoubtedly going to be looking for cornerback help in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Shaun Wade is the next great cornerback out of Ohio State and the top cornerback in the 2021 NFL Draft class. He has primarily played slot cornerback through the two years of his college football career, but that is mostly due to playing alongside two first-round cornerbacks at all times. With Jeffrey Okudah and Damon Arnette on the outside, Wade was in charge of locking down slot. And that is exactly what he did.
Wade shows an impressive combination of speed, quickness, physicality and natural ball skills. He does a great job of keeping up with opposing receivers throughout the route and breaks on the ball extremely well. Wade will have to prove himself as an outside cornerback in 2020, but I have full confidence that he will be just as successful there as he has been in the slot.
Simply put, this guy is an elite cornerback prospect who has massive upside at the next level. With the sixth pick of this mock draft, the Jets find an incredibly talented player at an important position of need.
