3. Lamar Jackson, Cornerback, Nebraska

The New York Jets picked up a very big and physical defensive back when they signed Lamar Jackson after the draft. This is my favorite signing by far as Jackson was a prospect that I fell in love with during the draft process.

He’s very physical and has great size at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds. This had Gregg Williams written all over it. Jackson is best when playing press-zone using his body to jam receivers early. He has the ball skills necessary to play corner, but he does lack ideal long speed.

In 2019 Jackson recorded 40 tackles (4.5 loss), three interceptions and 12 passes defended. He also chipped in with one sack. To say he fills up the stat sheet is an understatement, but there is a ton of room for Jackson to grow.

There have been some questions whether he has the speed to stay at cornerback, which led to speculation about a possible switch to safety. He has the physicality and strength to stay at corner and his ball skills have progressed every year, so he’ll have to continue to grow in order to stick at the position. Jackson also needs to show more effort in defending the run as he seems uninterested at times.

Overall, Jackson has a decent shot at making the New York Jets final roster. He has almost everything Gregg Williams likes in his cornerbacks and has the willingness to learn and be better. This could be a fun battle to watch in training camp with Jackson competing for one of the final outside corner spots. New York drafted Bryce Hall and brought back Arthur Maulet adding to a crowded room that includes Bless Austin and newly signed Pierre Desir.

4. Javelin Guidry, Cornerback, Utah

Guidry is a polar opposite of Lamar Jackson. The Utah corner has blazing speed and short stature. At 5-foot-9 and 191 pounds, he has the perfect size to be a slot corner in the NFL.

The New York Jets went with speed and athleticism which is not a knock at all. However, Guidry is not very technically sound. He needs to learn a lot about coverage schemes and how to play his position.

As he learns the ins and outs of the defense Guidry will be able to contribute on special teams. He has track speed, running the 40-yard dash in 4.29 seconds. Special Teams coach Brant Boyer will undoubtedly test him out at gunner in training camp. That would be his best way to make the team. If not, he’s likely looking at the practice squad.

5. Bryce Huff, Linebacker, Memphis

The New York Jets may have gotten a hidden gem in Memphis linebacker Bryce Huff. He has all the ingredients to be a ferocious edge rusher except one, size. Huff doesn’t have the strength to play with his hands in the dirt at defensive end, but his speed and quickness are unquestionable.

Huff does have issues with getting off blocks, but his speed and athletic ability should allow him to be an effective standup rusher. He could make the team out of the gate if he shows that he’s capable of making an impact as a situational edge rusher in training camp.

He has exceptional bend and a very quick first step that leaves offensive tackles playing catch-up. He posted 18 sacks in his career at Memphis with just 6.5 coming in 2019. If he has a set role, he should be very effective for the New York Jets.
