2020 NFL Draft: Grading each San Francisco 49ers draft pick
It was nice to see the San Francisco 49ers address the offensive line on day three, but in reality, they didn’t need to find a starter in this spot, just some depth. The Niners traded away a fifth-round pick in this draft and a third-round pick next year for Trent Williams.
Colton McKivitz will come in to San Francisco with minimal expectations, but he can challenge for a roster spot. He’s competitive and looks for work, and is great at reaching to the backside 3-tech in the run game. However, McKivitz struggles in his pass sets and isn’t great in space, where this offense will need him at times.
There were better options on the board here to address the interior, an area where they needed more, and better options at tackle as well.
Grade: D+
The Niners continued their run on offense by selecting Georgia tight end Charlie Woerner. Woerner never played a full season with the Bulldogs in his four-year career and didn’t produce much at all as a pass-catcher. There’s some upside with him athletically, so hopefully, his best football is ahead of him.
Grade: C
San Francisco finished out their draft in the seventh round with another receiving, selecting Tennessee wideout Jauan Jennings. Jennings had a tough draft process with his combine numbers, but on tape, you see a competitive player at the catch point and toughness after the catch. It will be interesting to see how the 49ers use him in their offense, which primarily features good route runners and explosiveness. Jennings doesn’t really fit the bill here.
Grade: C+
Overall Draft Grade: B
It’s hard to give the San Francisco 49ers a top tier grade even with their two first-round picks. They had a very lackluster day three and didn’t add anyone to their secondary, which let open the floodgates down the stretch in Miami.
