2020 NFL Draft Grades: Jacksonville Jaguars swing for the fences
By Evan Bachman
Davon Hamilton is one of seven players from an incredibly talented Ohio State defense to be drafted this year and while he isn’t the biggest name out of that group he is still a solid prospect.
He has been productive in his career at Ohio State as both a run stopper and a pass rusher. He wins at the line of scrimmage with elite strength and power. At the combine, he had 33 reps on the bench press, which was the most amongst defensive linemen.
In the pass rush, he can push the pocket and at times can overpower offensive linemen and put pressure on the quarterback. In run defense he’s even better, he wins leverage battles at the line of scrimmage and bullies offensive linemen at times.
My biggest concern with him is that he is a below-average athlete. In college, it’s easy to be productive if you’re just stronger than everyone, but in the NFL offensive linemen are also strong. To be productive as a pass rusher at the next level, you have to be able to win with quickness too and I’m not sure if he can do that or not.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to the future with this selection. Defensive tackle isn’t an immediate need for the Jaguars, but with Al Woods and Abry Jones both having just one year left on their deals, it is a future need. While Hamilton probably won’t get too many snaps his rookie year, he could be a big part of their defensive line rotation in the future. Given that Hamilton projects to become a solid contributor in the future, this selection provides solid value.
