Los Angeles Chargers: 2020 NFL Draft Grades and Analysis
This is an instance of a great pick but at bad value.
Joshua Kelley projects to be the last piece of the puzzle in the Los Angeles Chargers running back corps. Current starter, Austin Ekeler, will still receive the majority of the carries but Kelley will be used for the hard nose, between the tackles running situations that Ekeler has struggled with since entering the league.
If Kelley was not such a perfect complement to Ekeler, this would be a much harder pick to swallow as there was a ton of talent left at more important positions in the fourth. Also, what this pick means for current back up Justin Jackson has yet to be seen but Anthony Lynn has shown he can be creative with the backs on his roster.
Kelley plays with a passion and it shows every time he touches the ball. He wants to hit people when he runs. He’s incredibly physical and it shows late in games when defenses are tired. He will never be the guy to make someone miss in the open field and take the ball eighty yards for a touchdown but if you need four yards to close out a game, Kelley is your guy.
Look for Kelley to be an early preseason darling in training camp. The Chargers have a knack for finding quality running backs in the draft.
