2020 NFL Draft: Saahdiq Charles a worthy OT investment for Redskins
Right after they traded Trent Williams, the Washington Redskins take Saahdiq Charles, a high upside OT, in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Washington Redskins began their day trading left tackle Trent Williams to the San Francisco 49ers. In exchange for Williams, the Redskins received a fifth-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft and a third-round selection in 2021. Just a few minutes after the Williams trade, the Redskins took offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles with the 108th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Charles is not the most polished prospect entering the NFL this year, but there is plenty to like about his game. Charles is quick off of the ball and moves extremely well in space. He has great length at the offensive tackle position and uses is well in pass protection.
Charles seemed to play a little light at LSU but weighed in at 321 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine. If he can keep this good weight on his frame, I like to think that Charles will naturally have more functional strength at the next level. This was an area of concern in college and it could keep him out off of the field early in his NFL career if it continues.
Simply put, Charles is an impressive athlete for an offensive lineman who also shows impressive on-field awareness in pass protection. He understands who he needs to block at all times and has the quickness to get there and take care of his responsibilities. He certainly has some room to grow as a player at the next level, but Charles also has some nice upside at the left tackle position going forward.
Charles is obviously not going to come in as a ready-made Trent Williams replacement for the Washington Redskins, but he is a talented prospect who could grow into an important offensive piece for the team.
