2020 NFL Draft: Colts take Jacob Eason, perfect developmental QB
The Indianapolis Colts find a great developmental quarterback prospect in Jacob Eason, who they took in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Indianapolis Colts signed Philip Rivers to be their starting quarterback for the 2020 season, but he is obviously not a viable long-term option for the team. We figured that they would take a shot on some quarterback upside at some point in the 2020 NFL Draft and they did with the selection of Jacob Eason in the fourth round.
Eason shows fantastic natural arm talent and is the perfect player for the Colts to groom behind Rivers. Eason is not ready to come in and make an immediate impact, but his raw talent is undoubtedly worth taking a chance on in this range.
If he is ever going to grow into a starter at the next level, Eason is going to have to improve his decision making. He seemed lost on the field a lot of the time and did not show the best pocket presence. Eason is an athletic player who can throw on the run, but he panics in the pocket far too often and does not see the field overly well.
All of that being said, if Eason comes in and works hard at his craft, he has the upside to become the franchise quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. I would not exactly bet on that actually coming to fruition, but his raw talent gives Eason that kind of upside.
This pick is perfect for the Colts. Chris Ballard and company knew that they needed to find a guy who could potentially take over as their long-term option at the quarterback position. Being able to snag Eason this late gives them that needed long-term upside at the position, but if he doesn’t work out, they can easily cut their losses and move on. A quarterback room that includes Philip Rivers, Jacoby Brissett and Jacob Eason gives the Colts the right mix of short and long-term value.
