The Kansas City Chiefs finally go after a defensive back, selecting a versatile one in L’Jarius Sneed.

The Kansas City Chiefs have done very well so far in the 2020 NFL Draft, bringing in an elite pass-catching back in Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a good linebacker in Willie Gay Jr. (who they valued as a first-round player), and a great depth tackle in Lucas Niang who can be a starter down the line.

In the fourth round, Kansas City finally addressed the secondary, selecting versatile defensive back L’Jarius Sneed out of Louisiana Tech. Sneed played corner his first three seasons at Louisiana Tech, registering five picks and 13  passes defended. After three years, Sneed moved to safety, and looked more comfortable, grabbing three picks in addition to making 73 tackles, 3.5 of which were for a loss. Don’t forget about his three picks as well.

So what is Kansas City getting with Sneed? Like we’ve mentioned, he will be a versatile piece in the secondary that can move around. He’s a great athlete in the secondary, and his range shows up on tape immediately. Sneed also has good ball skills, as evidenced by numbers in his four seasons in college, and he can fly downhill to make tackles near the line of scrimmage.

Sneed needs to work in his ability to recognize routes, but he will become a matchup guy for the Chiefs to move around the formation. If he can get some reps deep at safety while Tyrann Mathieu does work near the line of scrimmage. Kansas City should also be able to flip them and give Sneed a chance to make plays in the backfield as a blitzer with his explosiveness.

The 2020 NFL Draft has gone very well for the Chiefs, and it gets better by finally getting someone to reinforce the secondary.
