With the 27th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks make a head-scratching pick in Jordyn Brooks, the linebacker out of Texas Tech.

For the first time in ages, the Seattle Seahawks did not trade down out of the first round. The problem is they have a tendency to take players that nobody expects and most times, that is a bad thing. One example of this is L.J. Collier, a defensive end that was selected in the latter portion of the first round last year. He barely saw the field as a rookie and was not worth the early selection either way.

This year is no exception, as many have Jordyn Brooks rated as a day two-player. The selection of the Texas Tech linebacker in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft was baffling, to say the least, and I am not sure where the vision is to build a potential playoff roster. The other issue is that Patrick Queen, the linebacker from LSU, is a far superior prospect and was still sitting there before the Baltimore Ravens scooped him up the pick after.

Either way, Brooks is a tackling machine standing at 6-foot, 240 pounds. The senior has some athletic ability as a downhill thumper but struggles in coverage. He may help Seattle stop the run but I think they could have gotten a similar caliber player on day two of the 2020 NFL Draft. I’m not sure how much of an impact he makes right away.

As a very experienced starter, Brooks could eventually replace K.J. Wright but the Seahawks drafted Cody Barton and Ben Burr-Kirven in last year’s draft. He could also be a backup to Bobby Wagner but I just do not see three-down value with Brooks.

Linebacker seems like one of their last needs on the roster. I would have put the offensive line, defensive line, secondary, wide receiver, and running back above linebacker. Russell Wilson needs a better supporting cast and the defense struggled to get after the passer. This selection does not move the Seattle Seahawks forward.
