How should the Miami Dolphins attack the second day of the 2020 NFL Draft?

The Miami Dolphins put together an okay first day of the 2020 NFL Draft. They played the smoke game extremely well, and it allowed Tua Tagovailoa to fall to them at the fifth overall selection. Then, the Dolphins selected Austin Jackson at tackle, which seemed like a reach to the consensus. Finally, Miami traded back and selected Noah Igbinoghene at 30, a developmental corner with plenty of upside and a guy who be a returner from day one.

So, with three more picks in the second round, how should the Miami Dolphins attack it? Let’s look at a few nuggets right here!

More Protection for Tua Tagovailoa

Yes, the Dolphins went with Jackson in the first to hopefully be their franchise left tackle, but they should by no means be done addressing the position. The other tackle spot needs help and so does the interior offensive line.

It’s likely Josh Jones doesn’t last long on day two, but if the Dolphins have an opportunity to select him, they should. If they miss out on Jones, look for players like Prince Tega Wanogho, who brings athleticism and movement skills to the position, and Saadhiq Charles, who has excellent hand placement and mobility. If Charles off-field stuff is cleaned up, he’s got the talent.

Look at the interior as well. Jonah Jackson is so well-rounded as a prospect and he would be a great pick on day two. Matt Hennessy and Lloyd Cushenberry III should also be on the radar for Miami.

They should make sure one (if not two) of today’s picks are offensive linemen.

An Impact Safety

No safeties went in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, which is great news for the Dolphins. They’ll have the opportunity to get one of the top guys in the class at 39 if they so choose. Xavier McKinney has the versatility, tackling ability, and ball skills to thrive in Brian Flores‘ defense, and has been compared to Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Antoine Winfield Jr. should be considered as well, as he can be a ball hawk on the back end and is so great at processing things in front of him. If they look for athleticism, Jeremy Chinn could be the selection. He has range and ball skills as well but needs to speed up to the NFL game as a processor, which comes with experience.

Getting that Running Back

It was thought that one of the first-round selections for the Miami Dolphins would be running back, but Miami decided against it in round one. It’s good news too because three of the top four are still available.

D’Andre Swift has the lateral quickness, burst, breakaway speed, and receiving skills to be a feature back on all three downs. If he is the pick some time today, Fins fans should be excited. J.K. Dobbins is another one to watch, as he fits really well in that offensive scheme. He doesn’t have the long speed, but his receiving skills and toughness would be a great fit.
