53. Scouting Report. Safety. Xavier McKinney. player. Pick Analysis. Alabama. 2

On a night full of surprises, the fact that Alabama safety Xavier McKinney was not drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft was probably the biggest surprise to me. The Cleveland Browns need to take advantage and go up and get him.

To me, and likely to most of the NFL, Xavier McKinney is clearly the best safety in the 2020 NFL Draft. With safety being the biggest need remaining for the Cleveland Browns, this move just makes so much sense.

In this scenario, Cleveland and GM Andrew Berry get Chris Ballard from the Indianapolis Colts on the line and convince them to move down by giving them the Cleveland Browns fourth-round pick, pick 114 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Xavier McKinney would step in right away as the starting free safety across the field from Karl Joseph. McKinney is likely the most well-rounded safety prospect, filling every category on the stat sheet with impressive numbers.

In 2019, McKinney logged the following stats for the Crimson Tide: 95 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions (including a pick-six), five pass breakups, a fumble recovery and four forced fumbles.

You see that versatility on film when watching McKinney. He is always flying around the field and always seems to come into the picture as he relentlessly pursues the football. He is technically sound in man coverage, has great instincts in zone, is a willing and sound tackler in run support and excels as a blitzer.

Xavier McKinney is an outstanding playmaker and will thrive at the next level as a split safety, playing deep in zone and around the line of scrimmage throughout the game. The Cleveland Browns could move up just a little bit in the second-round and lock up the best player available right now following the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
