The Los Angeles Rams make an exciting first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, adding Cam Akers to their backfield mix.

The Los Angeles Rams did not go on the clock until the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. This team has some real needs on both sides of the ball that must be addressed and they fill one with an extremely talented player by taking running back Cam Akers.

There is a lot to like about Akers’ game at the next level. He is an extremely quick and elusive back who does a nice job of finding his spots and getting to them quickly. He is a sharp one-cut runner who also shows impressive burst through the hole. Akers also shows solid power at the point of attack and fantastic natural contact balance.

Akers has obvious upside as a runner and there is plenty to like about him as a receiver as well. he is a natural hands catcher out of the backfield who knows how to find space in the passing game and is a threat to take it to the house from anywhere on the field. He catches the ball well and turns upfield quickly to create extra yardage.

Akers is a nice fit for the Los Angeles Rams zone-rushing offense and could quickly help fans forget about Todd Gurley. While running back is a need for the Rams, I do question the value of this selection here. Akers is a good player, but it feels like they should have addressed another need here and worried about running back later. Linebacker, edge rusher, offensive line and cornerback are also major positions of need for this team.

Akers is an impressive football player who is going to make an impact for the Rams. That being said, there are a lot of good running backs in the 2020 NFL Draft class. LA could have found one later and taken care of a more difficult position to fill here.
