2020 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts snag playmaker Michael Pittman Jr.
The Indianapolis Colts kick off their 2020 NFL Draft class with the selection of Michael Pittman Jr., an interesting wide receiver prospect out of USC.
The Indianapolis Colts did not have a first-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, as they traded that pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for interior defensive lineman DeForest Buckner. Buckner is one of the best interior rushers in the entire NFL, so it’s difficult to beat them up too much for trading that pick away.
From a trade last year with the Washington Redskins, the Indianapolis Colts did hold the second pick (34th overall) on day two of the 2020 NFL Draft. With that 34th overall pick, general managers Chris Ballard and company found themselves an impact player at the wide receiver position in Michael Pittman Jr. out of USC.
Pittman is a big and athletic target who shows impressive contested-catch ability. He also shows impressive straight-line speed for such a big receiver. Pittman is a guy who can come in and make plays all over the field on the outside. He is an impressive playmaker in the short to intermediate-range and has the speed to make plays on the deep ball as well.
The Colts did draft Parris Campbell in the second round of the draft last year and they obviously also have T.Y Hilton still making plays on the outside. That being said, both Campbell and Hilton are more speed guys who can create after the catch the make plays down the field. Pittman pairs well with these guys as his impressive size and contested-catch ability gives them something that they lack at the wide receiver position.
It is going to be interesting to see how the Indianapolis Colts attack the rest of the 2020 NFL Draft. They undoubtedly got things started well with the selection of Pittman.
