59. Scouting Report. 5. Quarterback. Oregon. Justin Herbert. player. Pick Analysis

With neither the Miami Dolphins or the Los Angeles Chargers trading up to lock in their preferred quarterback, Miami sitting at five will have first dips on the signal callers (outside of Burrow) in the 2020 NFL Mock Draft.

Both teams have kept their plans pretty close to the chest, leaving everyone guessing as to who they actually prefer. The mantra for the majority of the season, well… the past couple seasons, has been “Tank for Tua”. But that has not been the word lately out of Miami.

Although it very well could be a smokescreen and the Dolphins could grab Tua Tagovailoa, I think the medical concerns are enough of a red flag to go with Herbert first. I’m not even really talking about his hip injury in particular. It’s the culmination of little injury after little injury that would have me concerned.

While many, many people are still high on Tua, insisting he would be in play at number one if not for the hip injury, Justin Herbert is a very impressive prospect in his own right. A very experienced starter and leader for the Ducks, Herbert could have come out last year and been a top prospect but opted to return to Oregon for his senior season.

I will say that if not for Tua’s injuries, Herbert would certainly not be considered the “safe” pick between the two, as he has been discussed of late. There are some inconsistencies with his game that will need to be corrected, but his ceiling is incredibly high.

With an extremely powerful arm, outstanding mobility and sound touch and anticipation in spurts, Herbert can become a top NFL quarterback if he continues to develop and becomes a more consistently accurate passer.

I believe that Herbert is a prospect that can really be a focal point in turning around an entire franchise, and that is what the Dolphins are looking for in this 2020 NFL Mock Draft. If he doesn’t reach his ceiling, maybe Miami wishes they would have taken Tua at some point down the road. But to me, the injuries can’t be ignored and Tua does not have that complete future-changing potential at the next level.
