Entering the fifth year of the Wentz/Pederson era, how will the Philadelphia Eagles address key roster issues in the 2020 NFL Draft? With the draft just a few days away, we explore the Eagles’ best options in all seven rounds.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ 2019 season will go down in the history books as another example of wasted potential in the team’s history. In the 2020 NFL Draft, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman will need to take the lessons of last year’s debacle and apply them to this year’s offseason. Like “the dream team” roster of 2011, last season’s roster looked stacked from front to back with talented free-agent acquisitions, Super Bowl veterans and well-regarded rookies.

But the 9-7 Eagles showed, building a quality roster and winning games are two different things. In the end, the 2019 Eagles only had an NFC East divisional banner and an ugly Wild Card loss to show for their efforts that season. There was a myriad of reasons why the season turned out the way it did that, in retrospect, seem obviously doomed to fail.

Veterans continued to get hurt. Disunity among the players led to media leaks and a broken locker room. Once quality starters regressed and depth pieces looked wholly unprepared for the new role thrust upon them. By mid-season, the team was plugging in practice squad players after dozens of injuries across the roster left their bench short of key players. Refusing to spend at the trade deadline, the front office kept their draft picks and cap space intact for 2020.

It was a season of heartbreak for Eagles fans. To see the expectations so high at the start of the season, only to see them dashed half-way through the season, only to rise up with the introduction of plucky practice squad players and a front seven that kept games manageable for Carson Wentz.

In the end, a questionable late-hit to the back of Wentz’s helmet in the Wild Card Round sealed the season. Backup quarterback Josh McCown wasn’t able to carry the team to a late-game victory because (surprise) another injury.

Now the Philadelphia Eagles head into the 2020 NFL Draft with more picks then they have had in any year since 2017. With eight picks in this year’s draft, Roseman and the rest of the Eagles scouting department will have a chance to fill in key roster spots that were released during free agency or underperformed in the 2019 season.

With the departure of key locker room leaders like Darren Sproles, Malcolm Jenkins and Jason Peters, the Eagles will need to focus on drafting playmakers that could one day take up key leadership roles. Not an easy thing to do when COVID-19 has made in-person interviews impossible, having to go solely on Combine interviews and college tape.

In this mock draft, we’ll explore possible scenarios for the Eagles as they enter the 2020 NFL Draft. We’ll explore each prospect’s college background, what role they can expect to step into in Philadelphia and why they are a smart pick for the team.

NOTE: While Roseman has a tendency to move up and down the draft by trading picks, for the purposes of this mock draft we will be selecting prospects at the Eagles current draft positions. The one exception to this rule will be the first-round pick, which receives an asterisk (*) since, for the purposes of this mock draft, it is highly likely he moves up to draft a well-regarded prospect.
