2020 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions Final 7-Round Mock Draft
A linebacker that has had contact with the Detroit Lions’ brass, Mykal Walker seems to be a late-round target for the Detroit squad. Walker has the stats and production to show the impact he made in college, averaging 91 tackles and 11.5 tackles for a loss while at Fresno State. He also averaged five pass breakups per season, showing some skill and promise in coverage.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein has a day three grade on him and believes that he can a core special teamer and decent backup. He also made a reference suggesting that Walker will need to play more aggressively in the NFL if he wants to stick to a roster.
Walker has the versatility to play both inside linebacker and on the edge, which Lions’ coaches will no doubt like. That versatility may also contribute to his ability to make the game-day roster.
"“As an inside linebacker, his instincts and awareness help take him where he needs to go… Shows recognition of blocking schemes… Reads QB and squeezes passing windows from zone drops” Lance Zierlein"
Those little snippets from Zierlein should tell you more about why Detroit is interested in adding him to the roster on day three. Most notably, his ability to read the quarterback and defend against the pass would be a welcome addition to the linebacker room.
