Clemson University. Pick Analysis. Cornerback. 35. player. 50. Scouting Report. A.J. Terrell

The Detroit Lions grabbed the best draft prospect in the class with the third overall pick, while filling a major need on the roster. Now, they need to address their secondary with their second pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

After trading away Darius Slay in the offseason the Lions are left with Desmond Trufant, Amani Oruwariye, and Mike Ford as the top outside corners on their depth chart. If they hope to have an improved defense this year, adding at least one tier one corner to the defense in the draft will be a must.

Detroit’s management team and coaches once again luck out here with a top man-coverage corner still available with the 35th overall pick. A.J. Terrell was the number one cornerback on a Clemson Tigers team that knows how to win the big game. Adding not only his skills in coverage but the ability to remain calm in big situations will be helpful for a mostly young cornerback room.

On the field, Terrell can play in any scheme but should excel in a man-heavy defense like the Lions run. He isn’t afraid to physical with the receiver and can shadow him down the field well thanks to solid athleticism and good instincts. He is a plug-and-play cornerback that can provide the Lions with adequate play (which is good for a rookie starter) his rookie season with the potential to bloom into a Pro-Bowl caliber starter.
