2020 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions Final 7-Round Mock Draft
With their last pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions take a young, developmental quarterback with a low floor but a solid ceiling. Cole McDonald out of Hawaii is a gunslinger with a gunslinger mentality. He is not afraid to turn the ball over if it means a potential big play down the field.
This pick is purely a flyer on a developmental quarterback with attractive physical tools that understands the mental part of the game but just needs some help reigning in his “throw it up” mentality. McDonald has a strong arm on him and can rip it when he needs to.
This playing style is the exact opposite of current QB2 Chase Daniels, who plays it safe and takes the easiest throws the defense gives him. Daniels won’t actively hurt the offense, but he won’t actively help it either. That’s where McDonald could prove helpful.
If the Lions coaching staff can get him to cut down on his mistakes and learn from current quarterback Matthew Stafford about taking calculated risks downfield then the former Hawaii quarterback could turn into a dependable backup who plays a similar style of game to Stafford’s, potentially helping the offense keep chugging along with minimum fall-off in the event that QB1 misses any time.
