Buffalo Bills: Possible trade-up targets in the 2020 NFL Draft
This is more than just making the Buffalo Bills locker room a family affair. Sure, you would be reuniting brothers in Stefon and Trevon Diggs, but both Diggs are perfect fits for the Bills and could both be very impactful additions this offseason.
Trevon Diggs is a very physical cornerback with great size and ball skills from a background as a receiver, like his brother. He is still a rather raw cornerback, relatively new to the position and still learning some of the ins and outs of being a corner.
Even being so new to the position, Diggs has already taken great strides in becoming an NFL-caliber corner. He uses his size, strength and length to be physical with receivers throughout the route. He is very smart, using his background as a receiver to predict his opponent’s move.
He has great athleticism, especially for his size, with fluid hips, quick feet and great mirroring ability. His lack of experience comes into play on double moves and with great long-run speed deep down the field, leading to some blown coverages or penalties.
With the Buffalo Bills, cornerbacks must excel in zone coverage. Diggs has the ball skills and instincts to excel in this defense, allowing him to play early in his career while he continues to develop as a true, well-rounded corner capable of locking down opponents man-to-man.
The Bills have an elite cornerback already on the roster in Tre’Davious White and tried to address the position in free agency. With Levi Wallace still in the fold, Buffalo went out and brought E.J. Gaines back, who was with the team in 2017, as well is giving Sean McDermott his All-Pro corner from their days in Carolina with Josh Norman.
Even with these other players already set to play cornerback, none of them are sure-things across from White. Norman struggled mightily in his last couple of seasons with the Redskins, Gaines could not stay healthy in his short stint with the Cleveland Browns and Levi Wallace was solid in his first two seasons in the league, but the team clearly didn’t feel confident enough in him to start as the second corner, given their offseason additions.
Diggs would have a chance to join his brother in the starting lineup as newcomers to the Buffalo Bills, and would at the very least be a viable starting option in a year or two once he fully learns how to play the cornerback position.
