player. 58. Safety. Cal. 66. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Ashtyn Davis

Ashtyn Davis is a prototypical free safety who plays great in deep coverage over the top and is exactly what the Washington Redskins need to match up with strong safety Landon Collins. He does have some versatility, which will help when playing in Ron Rivera’s scheme, but he is at his best when he can scan and roam the field from deep. According to PFF, he played 409 of his 672 snaps in the free safety position while the remaining snaps were split between the slot and in the box.

Davis’ best attributes include his range, speed, athleticism and ability to read quarterbacks. These traits all work together as his speed and athleticism are obvious when watching him play and when paired with his ability to roam a massive range you see his impressive closing speed. He shows this in both the running and passing game.

Although he is not considered a ball hawk, he finds himself around a lot of plays either breaking up passes (PBU) or making interceptions (INT). He had 15 PBUs and 6 INTs over the past two seasons.

Tackling and getting off of blocks are Davis’ biggest weaknesses, as his technique is not always there. That being said, over the middle of the field, he will set a presence as a big hitter, even at only 195 pounds. In the NFL you would hope he can get his weight a little higher and develop more skills to allow a better continuity between him and Landon Collins as Rivera expects his safeties to be interchangeable and have the ability to switch positions from play to play.
