Washington Redskins complete seven-round 2020 NFL mock draft
By Matt Murray
With the health of Tua Tagovailoa being a concern, the trade talks have started to calm down and the Redskins will likely choose to stick with the consensus selection at number two. With the second overall pick, they select edge rusher Chase Young who will be a defensive end in their new 4-3 scheme under Ron Rivera.
Rivera is known for having strong defensive line play and Young can be inserted in the starting line across from 2019 first-round pick Montez Sweat, with Da’Ron Payne, Matt Ioannidis and Jonathan Allen all in the defensive tackle rotation.
Chase Young is a dominating presence on the edge and shows amazing ability to rush the passer and also performs extremely well against the run. He has amazing quickness, bend and ability to get upfield both around the edge or penetrating gaps in the run game. He has a bottomless bag of tricks when it comes to rushing the passer and each game you can see him setting up offensive tackles with different pass rush combos.
Young is an extremely smart player that holds the edge and won’t overpursue. From the backside of plays, Young has a high motor and doesn’t take plays off. He is a spectacular tackler and has a nose for finding the football as he caused 7 forced fumbles in 2019. He also had 27 sacks in his last two seasons.
Ryan Kerrigan aftermath
Ryan Kerrigan may end up being on the wrong side of this pick as the 32-year-old is coming off a down year and entering the final year of his current contract that includes no dead money. He is a cut candidate going into the season if Young is the pick at two. He could also be a good rotational piece with Young and Sweat, but with a contract of approximately $11.7 million, I think the team will look to unload Kerrigan via a trade or release before the season.
