Buffalo Bills: Late-Round sleeper targets in the 2020 NFL Draft
By Tyler Kirk
Anthony McFarland Jr, RB, Maryland
Anthony McFarland is an explosive running back from Maryland. This kid can straight fly, posting a 4.44 forty-yard-dash time at the NFL combine.
The Bills already have Devin Singletary and other backs on their roster, so this move wouldn’t put Singletary’s job at question. What this move does is add depth for the Bills with an explosive playmaker who can take it the distance from any marker on the field.
McFarland is one of my favorite players in this years 2020 NFL Draft class. He shows so much burst and has so much determination to score when he is by the red-zone. I saw a game live against Ohio State in 2018 where McFarland had two runs of 75+ yards in under 6 minutes. He ended the day with 21 rushes for 298 yards and two touchdowns.
McFarland would bring the home run hitting ability to the Buffalo Bills offense when Singletary is out of the game. He also brings major mismatch issues for defenses when he lines up outside.
One trait that makes NFL running backs great is their ability to keep their pad level square as well as be balanced while taking hits. This is one strength of McFarland, as he is extremely balanced and has great footwork.
The one area of improvement at the next level is McFarland has to be able to get the tough yards and be willing not to bounce small runs outside. He has to learn to be disciplined in the scheme.
Overall, I love this pick for the Buffalo Bills and I think that he would have an impact in his first season for the team.
