Los Angeles Rams 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Pass rush priorities
Probably the most newsworthy release this free agency period was when the Rams let loose their former All-Pro star, Todd Gurley. While not necessarily a surprise, his departure leaves a big question mark at running back in LA.
Their backfield currently consists of Malcolm Brown and 2019 third-round pick, Darrell Henderson. These two combined for just 402 yards on 3.8 yards per carry last season, so adding another back in the 2020 NFL Draft is likely.
A mid-to-late-round target that could prove to be a steal at 126 is Joshua Kelley out of UCLA. Kelley is a traditional north-south style back that had a knack for finding the end-zone in college. He’s got enough straight-line speed to get into the second-level and would be a really nice contrast to Darrell Henderson, who many expect will take a big step in year two.
A common theme throughout this seven-round mock draft has been replacing the many losses the Los Angeles Rams experienced in free agency. That theme continues with the 199th overall pick, as I have the Rams finding a potential Nickell Robey-Coleman substitute in Lavert Hill out of Michigan.
Hill is an experienced, instinctual, and twitchy corner prospect that may not have the size or long speed to play on the boundary in the NFL but could find a comfortable home at nickel with the Rams.
He is super disciplined in coverage and seems to see everything around him. That vision and awareness could allow a guy like Hill to get work early, as well as, immediately help out on special teams.
For the Rams’ final selection of this mock draft, I have them finding some speed at the receiver position in Tyrie Cleveland out of Florida. Cleveland was a big-time recruit out of the state of Texas but was never able to really break out with the Gators.
In his four seasons, Cleveland was only able to rack up 1,271 yards and eight touchdowns, while slowly sliding down the depth chart as well.
While his collegiate career was ultimately a disappointment, he does show some likable attributes that could lend to him finding a role on special teams early. He’s got a nice blend of size and speed and has experience returning kicks as well.
He would be a low-risk/high-reward player to finish off the 2020 NFL Draft festivities for the Los Angeles Rams.
