Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Wide Receiver. 21. 54. USC. Michael Pittman Jr.. player

General manager Howie Roseman has only drafted a skill position player in the first round one time in his nine seasons controlling the draft in Philadelphia. Despite that fact, the consensus in the 2020 NFL Draft is the Philadelphia Eagles must address the wide receiver position in the first round.

Roseman will change his draft philosophy for the sake of giving franchise quarterback Carson Wentz a new target. But don’t expect him to change too much. Roseman loves big wide receivers from the Pac-12. This will cause some Eagles fans to simultaneously become enraged and happy, as 2019 draft pick J.J. Arcega-Whiteside (another big wide receiver from the Pac-12) failed to develop in time for last season’s playoffs.

Michael Pittman Jr., however, is something totally different. At 6-foot-4, he has a massive wingspan and has surprising speed for a receiver of his size. He dominated cornerbacks at USC at both the line of scrimmage and catch point. Rarely dropped passes too, which should be music to Eagles fan’s ears.

Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Cornerback. Jaylon Johnson. 22. 60. Utah. player

Jaylon Johnson may be the smartest cornerback in the 2020 NFL Draft, as he has shown time and again he is unafraid to jump his receiver’s route and make a play on the ball. The Minnesota Vikings will need all the playmakers in the secondary they can get, as they said goodbye to most of their secondary unit over the last year.

In three seasons at Utah, Johnson had 21 passes defended and seven interceptions, according to Sports Reference. He is bold and unafraid to make plays on the ball, something opposing quarterbacks and receivers will dread.

47. Scouting Report. Linebacker. LSU. player. Pick Analysis. Patrick Queen. 23

You would think with Brady leaving this offseason the Patriots would be making a move to quarterback right? Well, second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham may be a relative unknown to most fans, but his college film from Auburn is reminiscent of Brady. Short, manageable passes, for quick yardage and manageable third downs. Nothing flashy, but he embodies the quarterback equivalent of “can’t go broke taking a profit”.

So if not a quarterback, then who? Replacing Jamie Collins is going to be harder than anyone in Foxborough would like to admit, but LSU linebacker Patrick Queen is about as close as New England will get this late in the first round. He is fast, can play through contact and is a versatile linebacker.

Bill Belichick has always led through the defense. If Stidham isn’t the next Brady, at least Patriots fans can find solace knowing their defense will likely be another top-five unit in 2020.

15. Oklahoma. Kenneth Murray. 24. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Linebacker

To say the New Orleans Saints have any glaring needs is like asking a billionaire if they have any glaring needs in their life. Another sports car would be nice, but probably unnecessary. That being said, the Saints are in a fortunate situation where they can draft the best player left on the board.

Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray is as wholesome as they come. Besides being a really good guy (see scouting report), he is also a phenomenal run defending linebacker. Saints linebacker Kiko Alonso is coming off another ACL injury and the Saints will likely want an insurance policy for 2020 and beyond.

Murray already studies tape like an NFL player and has shown throughout his college career how valuable recognizing an opponent’s formations can be. He may not be as exciting as Simmons or Queen, but he has the athletic ability and determination to be a fixture on any NFL defense.
