2020 NFL Draft: Potential trade-up targets for Minnesota Vikings
By David Glancy
The Minnesota Viking’s biggest position of need heading into the draft is cornerback. The Vikings backfield is depleted after the departures of Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes, and Mackensie Alexander. In addition to the departures at corner, the Vikings lost backup safeties Jayron Kearse and Andrew Sendejo. With Anthony Harris entering the 2020 season on the franchise tag, the Vikings may consider making a move for a long-term option at safety.
Despite the possibility of multiple teams trading up in the top five, Jeffrey Okudah will be taken long before the Vikings get a shot at the top corner in the draft. C.J. Henderson is a mid-first round talent but is not expected to fall to 22 with other corner needy teams ahead of the Vikings. Jeff Gladney and Kristian Fulton are both talented press-man cover corners and strong fits for Zimmer.
With several teams looking to add a corner in the first, including the Raiders at 19 and the Jaguars at 20, the Vikings may consider moving up to get their preferred target, which could include Henderson depending on how he may fall. Given the amount of late-first to early-second level talent at corner, the Vikings may opt to take a corner at 25 with Jaylon Johnson, Noah Igbinoghene and A.J. Terrell as options.
With a total of 12 picks, including two selections in the third round, it is likely the Vikings will double down and select a second corner at some point in the draft. Amik Robertson is an enticing nickel option at pick 105 but the Vikings could consider moving up from their 89th pick to draft Damon Arnette, Cameron Dantzler or Bryce Hall.
Safeties Xavier McKinney or Grant Delpit could be options for one of the Vikings first-round picks but would be a luxury pick with Harris still on the roster. Minnesota Golden Gopher Antoine Winfield Jr. is an enticing option if the Vikings look to trade up in the second round, but would likely wait to address depth at safety. If the Vikings plan to move on from Harris, small school options Jeremy Chinn and Kyle Dugger would be enticing options to grow into a starting role.
