Five most underrated offensive prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft
John Simpson – OG – Clemson
2019 Season Stats: 14 Starts
Like with the wide receivers and running backs, there are a few big names among the interior offensive line group that has garnered a lot of attention. Guys such as Cesar Ruiz, Lloyd Cushenberry III, and Jonah Jackson are considered to be the top guys of the position group for the 2020 NFL Draft. But one name that has gone quiet throughout the offseason is Clemson guard John Simpson.
Simpson has had solid starting experience over the last two years at Clemson. A big-bodied guard at 6-foot-5, 330 pounds, Simpson displays a strong anchor creating a good amount of force in the run game. While a little sluggish in pass pro at times, he uses his powerful hands to stonewall guys at the point of attack.
As with Driscoll from before, Simpson doesn’t have a particularly high ceiling. Having said that, if Simpson can put everything together, then he could a starter for a while at the next level. As of right now, I have Simpson graded as an early fourth-round type player.
Simpson has starter upside, and will likely need to sit for a year to work on his technical issues. Despite this, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he goes to a team such as the Miami Dolphins and contributes right away.
