5. player. 59. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. QB. Justin Herbert. Oregon

I may not be the biggest Justin Herbert fan, but we cannot ignore the signs. The Miami Dolphins have been connected to Herbert for well over a year and it is difficult to see them leaving the 2020 NFL Draft without a new franchise quarterback. With Tua off of the board, Herbert stands out as the obvious choice for the Dolphins at No. 5.

I get the appeal of Herbert as a quarterback prospect. He is an exciting player to watch at times. Herbert has a big arm and he knows how to use it. There are times where he places the ball on an absolute dime down the field and he can undoubtedly use velocity to fit the ball into tight spaces. Herbert is also an extremely athletic and mobile quarterback who can chew up rushing yards with ease.

All of that being said, all of Herbert’s best plays always come within structure. He simply does not show great on-field awareness and does not play off-schedule well. Herbert also struggles to deal with pressure and that really concerns me. I am not saying that Herbert cannot become a legitimate franchise quarterback, but he does need to significantly improve if he is going to become one.

The Dolphins are extremely likely to leave the 2020 NFL Draft with either Tagovailoa or Herbert as their new franchise quarterback. No matter who the pick ends up being, Miami needs to use their significant 2020 NFL Draft capital to build up their offense around their new quarterback.
