Los Angeles Chargers 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Post-free agency
With the 112th pick of this 2020 NFL mock draft, the Los Angeles Chargers select DT Leki Fotu, Utah.
His fit with the Los Angeles Chargers: After cutting defensive tackle Brandon Mebane and signing Linval Joseph in free agency, the Chargers beefed up their defensive line and added a playmaker to help stop the run and bring some interior pressure from the one-technique position. However, after Joseph, the depth chart at the one-tech spot is devoid of talent.
Enter Leki Fotu.
At this point in Fotu’s young career, he is a limited, rotational player with a ton of upside. Fotu has an explosive first step and eye-popping gap penetration for someone his size but the mental aspect and his pass rush repertoire are not at an NFL level quite yet.
Fotu has the ability to become a three-down defensive tackle at the next level. He must be willing to listen to his coaches and absorb as much as he can from Joseph throughout his first couple of years in the league.
If Fotu can put it all together, the Los Angeles Chargers could find themselves with one of the biggest steals of the 2020 NFL Draft.
With the 151st pick of this 2020 NFL mock draft, the Los Angeles Chargers select CB, Harrison Hand, Temple.
His fit with the Los Angeles Chargers: Since Gus Bradley took over the defensive coordinator in 2017, the Chargers have played a Cover 3 defense similar to the scheme that the Seattle Seahawk’s “Legion of Boom” used to dominate offenses over the last decade or so.
The defense requires long, rangy corners with zone coverage skills to get the most out of the scheme. Hand (6-foot-0, 192 pounds) while slightly undersized, fits the mold of what the Chargers look for in outside corners. He has somewhat limited speed which will turn teams off but his IQ in shallow zones is some of the best in this class.
Hand would enter training camp with an opportunity to earn the CB2 spot next to Casey Hayward if he can beat out current starter Michael Davis. While both players offer intriguing benefits, Hand’s superior ability to attack the LOS in run support might be enough to give him the edge.
