2020 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears potential trade-up targets
Offensive guard was likely going to be a need regardless of what happened this offseason, but with the sudden departure of Kyle Long obviously changes things. Long, who had been struggling with injuries since 2015, announced his retirement from the NFL in January of 2020.
Recently, the Chicago Bears signed former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Germain Ifeadi to a one-year deal. However, GM Ryan Pace told The Athletic that they plan on Ifeadi kicking inside to play guard next to Bobby Massie in place of Long. But despite the Ifeadi signing, the Chicago Bears could still be in the market for an offensive guard.
This is where Michigan’s Ben Bredeson comes into play. Bredeson, who will likely be drafted in the middle rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft, is one of the better guard prospects in the class. Bredeson would bring starting experience and nastiness to the Chicago Bears offense. While he is not as athletic as one would like in a starting guard, however, Bredeson still remains a technically sound player overall.
Similar to the Moss situation from before, the Chicago Bears would likely have to create a third or fourth-round pick for themselves depending on where he falls. As such, the competition for such a trade scenario would likely be similar to the trade up for Moss.
