Top team needs for the San Francisco 49ers in the 2020 NFL Draft
The Trenches
Finishing out the needs for the San Francisco 49ers are the trenches. Let’s start on the offensive line. The tackle spots look good with Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey, and Weston Richburg is as solid as they come at the center spot. The issues for the Niners exist at guard, and it was prevalent in the Super Bowl. Chris Jones ate up their guards all game long.
The 2020 NFL Draft doesn’t feature a great group of interior offensive linemen, but it’ll be difficult to find one later in the fifth round. That’s where trading back comes in. If the Niners can move back and get someone like Matt Hennessy or Damien Lewis, two guys with good movement skills, that would be best. They could also stay put at 31 and get Michigan’s Cesar Ruiz.
On the defensive line, it’ll be difficult to replace DeForest Buckner. Arik Armstead plays a lot of 5-technique, so finding an impact 3-technique to free up Armstead and Nick Bosa would be great.
If Javon Kinlaw were to be available at 13, he’d be hard to pass up. Kinlaw is an athletic pass-rushing defensive tackle with a non-stop motor and evidenced growth defending the run. If they wait later, someone like Justin Madubuike or Ross Blacklock could be the pick.
The Niners have few needs, but addressing them will be important during the 2020 NFL Draft if they expect to make another Super Bowl run.
