2020 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts late-round wide reciever targets
Taking a look at some wide receiver targets for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Even with the departure of Andrew Luck, the Indianapolis Colts still had great expectations for the 2019 NFL season. Jacoby Brissett and the plethora of off-season acquisitions were supposed to be amongst the leagues best offenses- but that couldn’t be farther from reality.
The team finished 25th in total offense. and just seemed to lack identity in a post-Andrew Luck world. There are a plethora of issues to point at when discussing why this was the case, but I think it’s obvious what the number one issue was- the wide receiver corps.
The team finished a whopping 30th in receiving yards, 31st in catches greater than 25 yards, and were also amongst the league leaders in dropped passes. To put it bluntly, they were atrocious. It’s clear the positional group needs an overhaul and what better place to look than the draft. Chris Ballard knows he has is work cut out for him, and needs to finally get this group right so it stops being a problem.
This wide receiver draft class is regarded as one of the deepest the league’s ever seen, and guys who would be sure-fire top draft selections most years will full because of it. The Colts have plenty of prospects to choose from, and boy, there are some great ones.
In this post, we are going to take a look at some late-round wide receivers who the Indianapolis Colts should target.
1. Antonio Gandy-Golden, Liberty
This is a name to get familiar with. Coming out of Liberty. Gandy-Golden is not a guy many college fans are too familiar with. Even with little clout surrounding him, he’s been able to have a consistently excellent career at Liberty.
When turning on the tape the first thing you notice about AGG is his incredible size for a wideout. Standing just over 6-foot-4 and weighing over 220 pounds, he is an absolute monster on the field. His frame allows him to have an incredible catch radius and get to balls that most don’t have the ability to get to.
He isn’t the crispest route runner but he does run the ones in his limited route tree at Liberty well. Even though he ran a pretty sub-par 4.6 time in the 40 at the combine, he plays faster than that and does a great job of accelerating through his route. He defiantly has that deceptive quickness trait that most guys his size don’t have.
He went from a guy who seemingly couldn’t catch a cold in 2018, to one who couldn’t drop a ball just a season later. If 2019 wasn’t a fluke and he truly has turned his drop issue around, he can do some serious damage at the next level. The fact he played at Liberty and only had one great year of tape will definitely hurt his stock, but that is only to the benefit of the Indianapolis Colts.
Taking a flyer on a guy like AGG in the fourth or fifth round will be a great investment, and could be a great piece to compliment the next franchise quarterback of the team.
