Safety

The safety position is tops on the next tier of needs for the Miami Dolphins, especially after they released Reshad Jones. Right now, the Dolphins roster lists Eric Rowe and Adrian Colbert as the starting safeties, which isn’t going to cut it. Adding better talent at the position is key.

We’ve already talked about how the Dolphins have plenty of picks early in the draft, and one should address the safety spot. The position has a good number of potential starters in this class, especially at the top. Head coach Brian Flores will want to have at least one impact defender on the back end, and will probably want a versatile playmaker as a cornerstone on defense.

There’s one player who would fit perfectly in Miami, and that is Alabama’s Xavier McKinney. McKinney is a versatile safety and draws some comparisons to Devin McCourty, who has been very successful in New England. He has great closing speed and is a sure tackler near the line of scrimmage, along with being successful on the back end in coverage.

If they pass on selecting a safety in the first round, there are other versatile players to pick. Two names that jump out are Ashtyn Davis and Antoine Winfield Jr. Both can play near the line and on the back end. Whoever they select, it needs to be early in the draft.
