Detroit Lions 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Stockpiling talent
Creating a complete seven-round 2020 NFL mock draft for the Detroit Lions.
The Detroit Lions must significantly improve in 2020 if head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn are going to keep their jobs. They can blame the Matthew Stafford injury all they want for their 3-12-1 record last season, but this team was an absolute mess in 2019. Not having Stafford obviously hurt, but the defense was absolutely putrid as well. Simply put, this team needs a serious restock of talent.
Luckily, they are in a good position potentially load up on both sides of the ball through the 2020 NFL Draft. The Detroit Lions currently hold the third overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and nine picks overall. Let’s take a quick look at the picks that they currently hold:
- Round 1, 3rd Overall
- Round 2, 35th Overall
- Round 3, 67th Overall
- Round 3, 85th Overall
- Round 4, 109th Overall
- Round 5, 149th Overall
- Round 5, 166th Overall
- Round 6, 182nd Overall
- Round 7, 235th Overall
With extra picks in both the third and fifth rounds of the draft, the Lions are in a great position to hammer value and find potential contributors in the middle rounds. However, with some simple maneuvering at the top, this team could quickly find itself in an even better position to stockpile some serious talent.
Of course, I am talking about a potential trade-down from the third overall pick. It is no secret that the Detroit Lions are open for business at No. 3, as they hold all of the card for a few quarterback-needy teams. Joe Burrow and Chase Young are extremely likely to go first and second in the draft and the Lions are not likely to attack the quarterback position at three. This leaves the door wide open for a team to come up and make a move for Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert at No. 3.
The Miami Dolphins (who hold the No. 5 pick) and the Los Angeles Chargers (No. 6) are the most likely teams who could be looking to make a draft-night deal with the Detroit Lions. In this trade-down scenario, the Lions could still be in a position to land one of the premier defensive players in the draft and pick up extra draft capital to help build their roster later. It is a win-win for Detroit.
In this seven-round 2020 NFL mock draft, we are going to look hard at trade-down scenarios at No. 3 and try to find a desperate team wanting to come up and make a move for a quarterback. Without further ado, here is a complete seven-round 2020 NFL mock draft for the Detroit Lions.
