New England Patriots 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft: Life after Tom Brady
By Ian Higgins
Round 3
Projected Starters: Beau Allen, Lawrence Guy, Deatrich Wise
After having his draft stock fall due to injuries and lackluster statistics in his final season at Alabama, Raekwon Davis is a perfect candidate for a team to take a chance at getting a day two star.
Belichick has shown that with such potential, injuries don’t scare him away (ex: Rob Gronkowski). At 6-foot-7, Davis has unmatched reach and will be a dominant presence batting down balls at the line of scrimmage. New England is a defensive front that rotates pieces throughout a defensive series, and Davis will fit in well next to Guy and Wise.
*Compensatory selection
Projected Starters: Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung
A high-riser through the NFL combine, Antoine Winfield Jr. displayed the range and overall athleticism that made him a ballhawk safety at Minnesota. With 7 interceptions in his final collegiate season, Winfield is a through-and-through ballhawk safety that brings an aggressive aerial presence to his future secondary. Trading away former ballhawk Duron Harmon, Belichick could look for a centerfield replacement in the 2020 NFL Draft.
*Compensatory selection
Projected Starters: Chase Winovich, John Simon
One of the best pure-speed rushers in the 2020 NFL Draft, New England needs a complete retooling of their outside linebacker and pressure-generators. Curtis Weaver is a speedy pass-rusher who can beat tackles to the spot and bend the edge to the quarterback on even the shortest of drop-backs.
With no true speed rushers on the current roster and a plethora of players who use their power and technique to work their way inside, Weaver could be a welcome change of pace to this defensive front.
Round 4
*Via CHI
Projected Starter: Matt Lacosse
Still searching for someone to fill the void left by hall-of-famer Rob Gronkowski, Albert Okwuegbunam is the most athletically capable prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft. Okwuegbunam measures in at 6-foot-5, 258 pounds and ran a 4.49 forty at the NFL combine.
This level of athleticism was apparent on tape, but seeing the number puts his speed into perspective. Okwuegbunam did his best work utilizing speed to get in behind defenders up the seam and used his height to outreach defenders to well-placed high point passes (sound familiar?). Okwuegbunam is a true weapon who in the right franchise could become a star.
