Cleveland Browns 7-round 2020 NFL mock draft after big FA signings
After bringing in a big-name tight end in Austin Hooper to pair with David Njoku, tendering Kareem Hunt with the intention of having him on the roster in 2020 and trading for a fullback, it’s pretty clear that the Cleveland Browns aren’t going to be running a whole lot of three-wide receiver sets this season. As was the expectation with Stefanski coming in.
In Minnesota, Stefanski ran a run-first offense that opened up play action, utilizing two tight ends on the majority of snaps and a fullback more frequently than nearly any other team in the league. They had a pair of star wide receivers in Stefon Diggs (now a Buffalo Bill) and Adam Thielen, and a bit of a revolving door at WR3 over the past few years with Stefanski.
The Browns roster is starting to look eerily similar to the guys mentioned above with the dynamic LSU duo of Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry lining up at receiver. Behind those guys, there aren’t a whole lot of big names, or even bodies, to show for.
The 2020 NFL Draft has one of the deepest wide receiver classes that we have ever seen. You can realistically get a long-term starter at the position in the sixth or seventh round. I believe that Antonio Gandy-Golden has the potential to be a star in the NFL and I would RUN that ticket up if he was still on the board this late in the draft.
You don’t often find a receiver with Gandy-Golden’s blend of height, size, speed, strength, run-after-catch ability and overall production in college. Especially this late in the draft. But with so many great receiver prospects, a raw, smaller school guy like Gandy-Golden could possibly fall this far.
While he may not be utilized a ton right away in Stefanski’s offense, Gandy-Golden would be in the same receiver room as two of the best in the game, could continue to develop his route tree, cut down on his drops and become the best receiver he can be for the future.
It’s highly unlikely that the Browns will be able to keep both Beckham and Landry for many years to come, so it would be smart to think about life without at least one of them. Gandy-Golden would not only provide some much-needed depth at the position right away, but he could take a little bit of time and develop into a premier outside target in the NFL.
A big, tall guy like him would provide Baker Mayfield with a great red zone, jump ball target going forward. In the short-term, having Gandy-Golden on the outside would allow Landry to operate out of the slot (where he really excels) while all three are still together. This would be an absolute steal for the Browns in the sixth round and could help shape the future of the offense going forward.
Levonta Taylor was a highly recruited cornerback prospect out of high school who was expected by many to become the next great Florida State corner. However, Taylor has had to battle through a back injury throughout his college career, leaving his production at undesirable levels and even leading to a position change to safety.
If healthy, Taylor still has the physical tools to be a solid NFL player in the secondary. As a seventh-round pick, Taylor would actually have a chance to come in and earn some pretty significant playing time right away if selected by Cleveland.
The Browns have two young, outside cornerbacks that they really like from the last two drafts in Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams. Taylor would be able to use his experience as a lockdown corner in high school and time as a safety in the ACC to fill the nickel role in the Browns defense. After releasing T.J. Carrie, the Browns are in need of a slot corner and Taylor is definitely worth a flier this late in the draft given his background and athletic upside.
