2020 NFL Draft: Three-Round NFL mock draft with major trades in top 10
Assuming health, Tua Tagovailoa has a legitimate chance to become an elite-level franchise quarterback at the next level. The Miami Dolphins have always seemed like the best fit for Tua, but they risk losing him if they simply stand pat at number five overall. Instead of sitting back and waiting, the Dolphins take their future in their own hands and use some of their extra draft capital to trade up and secure Tagovailoa.
The Dolphins have a ton of 2020 NFL Draft capital and can afford to give some up in order to secure their new franchise quarterback. Tagovailoa has incredible upside at the next level and would immediately give the Dolphins a player who they can build around.
Most of the time, I tend to give the New York Giants an offensive tackle in mock drafts. General manager David Gettleman is known as a guy who builds through the offensive and defensive lines and offensive tackle stands out as an obvious need for this team. On top of that, the 2020 NFL Draft is loaded with offensive tackle talent that is worthy of the fourth-overall selection. That being said, we are going to go in a different direction here.
Isaiah Simmons is a fantastic defensive prospect who has massive upside at the next level. He is incredibly athletic for an in-the-box defender and shows unrivaled versatility in the 2020 NFL Draft class. Whether he plays linebacker, safety, slot cornerback or edge rusher, Simmons can make a consistent impact on the defensive side of the ball. Just get him on the field and let him work.
The Detroit Lions traded down two spots and picked up a late first-round selection for their troubles. Now making their selection at number five overall, the Lions are still able to land the same 2020 NFL Draft prospect that they likely wanted at three.
Jeffrey Okudah is a fantastic cornerback prospect who shows an impressive combination of length and athleticism on the outside. He is a tremendous man-to-man coverage defender who has legitimate shutdown corner upside at the next level. Snagging Okudah here and picking up another valuable 2020 NFL Draft pick is a dream scenario for the Lions.
The quarterback position stands out as a major need for the Los Angeles Chargers and Justin Herbert is right there for the taking. The Chargers could certainly decide to go in that direction but offensive tackle is also a massive need for this team. Tristan Wirfs is a fantastic athlete at the offensive tackle position and he showed that off with a legendary combine performance. He is also an extremely powerful player who has a ton of upside as a pass protector and run blocker.
An inter-division trade like this would be a bit odd, but it certainly makes sense for the current directions of these teams. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are an interesting team with impact talent on both sides of the ball. Jameis Winston was exciting to watch last year, but his 30 interceptions obviously held them back in a big way. They should be aggressively looking for a new franchise quarterback this offseason and Justin Herbert would be a great fit.
The Panthers appear to be building completely for the future and I could see them looking at a trade-down scenario like this to pick up extra draft capital down the line. With an extra first-round pick in 2021, the Panthers could put themselves in a position to snag at least a premier franchise quarterback next year, just for trading down seven spots. This is a deal that makes sense for both sides and the Bucs can move forward with a legitimate franchise quarterback to build around.
