Defensive Maintenance

Maintaining and improving the defense as a whole may be the Texans’ biggest obligation during the 2020 off-season.

As the Texans were noted for struggling in defense, specifically their passing defense, emphasizing the defensive backfield would be a good start.

There are countless options the Texans can look into when signing potential defensive players and the 2020 free agent crop is deep at all three levels (defensive line, linebacker, defensive backs).

Chris Jones is considered one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL. Now a Super-Bowl champion from the Kansas City Chiefs, the Houston Texans should consider signing Jones if the Chiefs are unable to afford franchise tagging him. Especially since the Texans don’t have a 1st-round pick, they are going to need to hit free agency hard.

In the 2020 NFL Draft, most of the top prospects will be out of reach, but in the second round, the Texans may be able to get a much-needed defensive playmaker since the first couple of rounds could be dominated by quarterbacks, wide receivers, and offensive linemen.

Improving their defense is essential and some of the primary damage will have to be done in free agency.
